アイルランドの都市

アイルランドに５つの都市があります。実は５つといったけど、数え方によっては、５つから15都市ぐらいになる可能性があります。公式のリストはダブリン、コーク、リムリック、ゴールウェイ、ウォーターフォードです。

ダブリンは首都でもっとも大きい都市です。人口は測り方によっては最大で１５０万人ほどです（ちなみに、アイルランドの人口は５００万人です）。次の人口が多いのは南西の都市のコークです。 コークの人口は３０万人です。強い郷土愛とダブリンの競争があるので、冗談のニックネームの「People's Republic of Cork」があります。まるで他の国の名前みたいです。

次は西の都市リムリックです。人口は１０万人ぐらいです。リメリックという詩の一種は都市の名前からできました。実際に英語で同じ言葉ですが、しかし、辞書では違うカタカナの読み方があるようです。近くの西の都市のゴールウェーイの人口も１０万人ぐらいです。リメリックに比べて、人口はちょっと少ないですが、ゴールウェーイが文化が強い都市だと考えられています。最後の公式の都市は私の故郷、ウォーターフォードです。６万人の人口と南東の都市です。アイルランドの都市の中で、最古の都市です。

この公式のリストは独立以来、更新されていません。そのため、公式の都市はイギリスの王によって決められたままです。そして、他の都市のリストが他の都市を含めます。たとえば、他のリストに歴史の都市、北アイルランドの都市、もっとも大きい街などが時々含まれています。明日ほかのいわゆる都市について書こうと思います。

Dublin is the capital and biggest city. Depending on how you measure, the population is up to 1.5 million. For comparison purposes, Ireland's population is 5 million. The next biggest is the southwestern city Cork. Cork's population is 300,000. Because there's a strong city pride and competition with Dublin, it has the joke nickname "People's Republic of Cork". It's like the name of another country.

Next is the western city Limerick. The population is about 100,000. The type of poem called a limerick is named after this city. Actually, in English it's the same word. However, it seems in my dictionary there's a different katakana spelling. The nearby western city of Galway also has a population of around 100,000. Compared to Limerick, the population is a little smaller, but Galway is considered a city with strong culture. The last official city is my hometown, Waterford. It's a south eastern city with a population of 60,000. Among Ireland's cities, it's the oldest.

This official list was never updated after independence. As a result, the list was selected by the English king. So other lists include other cities. For example, historical cities, cities in Northern Ireland, the largest towns etc. are included in other lists. I think I'll talk about these other places called cities tomorrow.
