This is a French person talking : I learned English for porn. Don't judge me ! I was nineteen, I just discovered mangas and doujinshis (fanart, for those who don't know), I just moved in my first flat with my own PC... And then I discovered Yaoi (slash) and my life was changed forever. (insert appropriate music please) Yes, Uni was paradise. Problem : I didn't have much money (no student ever has) and I was used to read A LOT. I mean, a book a week at least and mangas were appetizers. (Also I was a bit shy and erotic mangas had a very noticeable cover. Presenting it to the cashier was a problem.) Internet saved me by hosting sites where people like me had translated delicious stories in French. I was so happy! (Well, when I wasn't studing, which wasn't a lot. Uni was hard too.) But it takes a lot more time to translate a doujinshi that it takes to read it. Soon, I was thirsty for novelties. Some months after, I realized that french translators were actually using english translations of japanese mangas! And certainly because there is more people talking English than French in the world, there was also MUCH MORE mangas on anglophones sites. Let's be franck : I always was very bad at English, a bit because I suspect that my high school was a REALLY bad one, a bit because I like I said, I was shy and pointing at me, demanding answers renders me mute. I already wasn't talking much in French. I wasn't exactly motivated. And then I was. To quote a fanfiction author I worship : There's so many times you can read "cock" before undestanding it's not about roosters. And I got better very fast. Then I tried bad erotic fanfiction and then I accidentally discovered good fanfiction. And at some point I tried books, because why not? And I just discovered fantasy and french translations were published SO slowly. Buying the English version was easier. And now I'm here.
