Christopher Columbus arrived on the island in 1492, , and he named it Hispaniola.
After he completed his exploration of the New World, this expedition triggered a series of events that led to the birth of the Dominican Republic.
This was one of the earliest territories conquered by Spain.
The Spanish Empire designated Santo Domingo founded by Columbus and settlers as its capital.
The island was rich in precious metals and plants, which brought wealth to the empire.
European diseases virtually wiped out the native population.
Currently, the Dominican Republic is considered to be the richest country among the Caribbean islands.
Mostly due to the tourism industry, with a GDP of 114 billion US dollars.
Like many Caribbean countries, it has a tropical maritime climate with little variation in seasons except for rainfall.
The vast number of Christians are evangelicals, making up 50% of the entire country.
About 30% are Catholics and 19% are atheists.
The official language is Spanish.
