About Music and School

Music is a compulsory subject in some schools. On the other hand, some schools do not prefer to include music classes in their academic curriculum. In this short essay, I am going to write about some aspects to consider in this matter.

First, there is a common belief about how music or learning to play an instrument could improve many cognitive aspects in individuals. A person with different skills or interdisciplinary qualities could be more competitive and able to think outside -the box and develop their creativity. Just to make an example, Einstein played the violin and claimed that this instrument helped him to think. There are even some academic papers and research that support theories of this kind. Not to mention that an early music discovery could be the trigger that a future musician needs to become a marvelous artist. Popular singers, like Beyonce, started their music career at a very young age.

However, there are some cons to including a compulsory music course. First, some children may not really be interested, to the point of feeling it like a waste of time, in comparison with some other more “important” subjects like mathematics, natural science, or sports. Music as a requirement could be a double-edged sword if they feel it as an academic burden.

In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages to including music compulsory classes. Maybe the wisest decision could be to let students explore music in their study plan. Of course, a successful music program needs good teachers and resources. A bad instructor or do not have enough instruments for all could increase the failure of any initiative.
