My favorite hobby is drawing pictures. I use a pencil, pen, and paper. I also use a tablet.

There's no such word “笔子" in Chinese，“子” is typically added to a noun to make it sound like cuter or smaller (very similiar to the suffix "-let" in English. But it doesn't combine with all objects ——比如：椅子，桌子，篮子 (correct)
It can also be used on human, but most of the time - it's dismissive because it sounds like the speaker is more experienced ——孩子，小子，小伙子；
In Qing Dynasty, high officials call male servants like ：小顺子，小李子，小邓子等 （顺，李，邓 are either their first or last names）- but this can also be a humorous way if you call your closest friends. :-)

For animals,
1） If there's 2 Chinese characters, people only use "小XX"：小企鹅，小刺猬，小骆驼
2） If there's only 1 Chinese character, most commonly people just say "小X": 小猫，小狗，小鹿
3） For some other animals (not so many), we can add "子": "兔子"，"狮子"，“鸭子”，but they can also be "小兔子"，“小狮子”，“小鸭子” or “小兔”，“小狮”， “小鸭”
so basically if you say "小X“ for animals, it's correct. :-)
Rather than a rule, using "子" is more like idiom, or it sounds more rhymed. u-i, i-i, a-i etc.
Oh by the way, if people say "猫子"，”狗子” —— we'll think the speaker is saying about a person! :-D (it can be a old-fashined nick name (many people don't like it, but it was believed that a humble name will bring good lucks), commonly used in North China)
