Don't be discouraged - your German is very good really. I don't know what type of job you are aiming for - but there are only very few you could not do right now - provided your spoken German is somewhere near the level of your written German.

As someone who has been learning Spanish for 3 weeks I have to tell you - if it wasn't for the large amount of cognates it shares with English, I would have given up already. To me as a novice it seems as if Spanish speakers just randomly sprinkle "lo" "le" "la" (and a few more) into pretty much any sentence like unicorn glitter.

And what's this things about "ser" and "estar"? Quite a unique way of thinking for sure and reflective of an interesting perception of both time and space - but for me a nightmare. I have to not only reach for a word - I have to examine context as well.

You guys are so minimalistic with your language - a single letter or even an accent can change the tense of a word - or a horse into hair. German is way more robust in that regard. A new idea manifests itself in a new word - often with a unique genesis. Don't just learn words as words where A on this side equals B on the other. Learn them as ideas with a history. This is especially true for German.

Then there is the constant matching of gender and number. I mean... I do understand how this works - but boy oh boy. In both German and English one car is blue and so are many cars. But not in spanish - here many cars are azules.

Just for kicks you guys stick "lo - la - le" at the end of an infinitive. Mind you these are just a few examples - I have found a lot more and I have only barely scraped the surface of this language.

So when you put all of this together it can be a bit overwhelming to someone who is not a native in a romance language. I did 5 years of latin - but that was quite different.
Trying to put together a sentence in Spanish like walking through molasses with lead boots on.

And yes - I agree - German is a difficult language. It is difficult for Germans. But you'll do just fine if you continue down the path you're on.

Wow, thank you for your words of encouragement, they really gave me a boost! I agree, Spanish can be a very tough language. I lived in Canada for 5 years during a very important period of anyone's life (8th to 12th grade), which meant that my learning process of the spanish language was cut short. I came back to Cuba and had to really work on it, because, although I could speak and write it fairly well, I had only very basic "theoretical" knowledge of the language. Even now as a Foreign Languages student, I can assert that the most difficult classes are the spanish ones (Gramática Española, Estilística, etc.). I find that part of this difficulty stems from the fact that it is a very "free" language, in the sense that there are many, many ways to express the same idea (some very poetic).
Now, my thing with German is, I want to become a translator/interpreter, which means I've to have absolute control of what I'm saying and right now I'm far from that. I've only been studying it for two years, but I feel as though there hasn't been any improvement as of lately (the last 6 months or so), which is really bumming me out.
Anyways, don't mind all my rambling and complaining. Thanks again and you keep working on your Spanish and soon enough you too will be sprinkling "lo, le, las" everywhere.

I'm glad I could help maybe a little. It seems that you are nurturing a philosophy of perfectionism. Maybe consider this: interpreters are not perfect language machines. They prepare and they continuously study. I have worked with a few - and I assure you they were very good and knew what they were doing - but they have flaws just like anybody else.

Secondly, the ones I worked with always translated into their native language - never the other way - for simultaneous translations anyways. If you are interested in translating literature you will find that these people are first and foremost writers - in their native language. They have an excellent command of course of the language(s) they are translating from - but they essentially rewrite a book when they translate it.

And last - but probably most importantly: learning is not a linear function where you input time and you get out results. Learning curves are bumpy. They have plateaus and they even regress at times.

If you feel you are stagnating right now, it is likely not because your learning is stagnating, but because your understanding is deeper than it has been before. This then in turn makes you more critical of your own efforts. It's like when you have been driving on the highway at 60 mph. When you get off it feels like your moving at snail speed for a moment; but you're still going 30 mph - which is a lot say from the perspective of a pedestrian.

Make sure you do a lot of listening - and if possible - speaking. I watch Peppa Pig in Spanish every morning. 🤣

Peppy Pig in Spanish is adorable! They made a German version as well. But you have outgrown the Peppa Pig no doubt - at least as far as your command of the German language is concerned. If you want to dive into German culture and practice comprehension try “Die Sendung mit der Maus”. It’s a kids show I watched growing up - but I watched it religiously still when I was in college. 🤣🤣🤷‍♀️ So did a bunch of my German friends. 😅
