Deadlines

I'm a university student, so I almost always have assignments during a term. Each assignment has a deadline, which is sometimes far from now and sometimes soon. If I'm not careful, I fall into a situation that I have so much homework that I can't deal with.
Once, I had final exams and term papers and assignments; it was a living hell for me. Since then, I keep in mind to finish my homework one day before the deadline and initiate long-term projects with a margin.

Not quite sure why, but 'far away' seems a bit more natural to me.

You need a verb with the 'soon' part at the end, eg. they are due soon.
