Day 24: I Agree to Everything and Understand Nothing

Everyone knows: We open an app or website and the first thing we have to do is to accept Terms and Conditions. Scroll, accept, done. No one reads them. Never. But we always click to accept, because otherwise we can't move forward. We've all agreed to sell our soul to a toaster app at least once. Just to see the weather while we wait for the bread to brown.

These documents are intentionally long and written in legal vocabulary, so we can't understand them. On the one hand, everyone is too lazy to read 12 pages of legal text to get into an app, on the other hand we have no choice. Everyone is referring to the same thing: It's written in all of them anyway. The only problem is that we didn't even read the first one.

Maybe one day a T&C will start like, "By continuing, you agree to let us read your thoughts while you brush your teeth." And we'll accept it without realizing it. Because we can't do it without a smart toothbrush and an app, which shows how clean they are in a 1-10 scale. Yeah, 21st century is the best.

But the problem isn't just in the users. The system was built to demand acceptance but not to facilitate understanding. 50 words sentences, endless legal paragraphs and words you never seen before. So yeah, we agree not because we understand, but because we want to move on with our lives.

You can't really put a pause before the explanatory "which" here.

Yeah, the 21st century is the best.

But the problem isn't just inwith the users.

These documents are intentionally long and written in legal vocabularyese, so we can't understand them.

"Legal vocabulary" sounds a little awkward here. While "legalese" may be a bit more informal, it helps the sentence flow.

On the one hand, everyone is too lazy to read 12 pages of legal text to get into an app,. And on the other hand, we have no choice.

Everyone is referring totalking about the same thing: I; it's written in all of them anyway.

The only problem is that we didn't even read the first one.

Maybe one day a T&C will start like, "By continuing, you agree to let us read your thoughts while you brush your teeth."

And we'll accept it without realizing it.

The "it" here isn't wrong, but it's just unnecessary.
