Today I had the pleasure to talk with a family from Melbourne, Australia.
While we were chitchatting, their accent keep hitting my mind in some awkward way: I couldn't tell where they were from.
I can recognize English, USA and generally every anglophone speaker, but that accent... Trust me: It was driving me mad!
At the end I couldn't hold back anymore, and asked which was their country. Melbourne, they replied.
Geez (I thought) what on earth are 4 Australian people doing in my microscopic hometown?
One of them was an old man that keep whispering at me instead of talking and It was as harsh to me as trying to understand Mordor's speaking. I was like "what do you mean sir?" all the time.
Never mind tho, I countered him with the most powerful defense in every's embarassed dude's pocket: a smile. I literally smiled and went away.
I know, I know - that wasn't too kind of me, but i really don't understand the language of the the Dark Lord.

'Hitting my mind' isn't a common expression in English. If you were trying to use the expression "Hitting me", it's usually only used for a sudden realization. For example, "It suddenly hit me that their accent was one I didn't recognize."
