Day 17: The Illusion of Control in Modern Life

We try to plan everything in life. Career, life goals, holidays, or even how we manage ourselves. We make plans, but the outcomes depend on hundreds of factors. Because life is unpredictable, we cling to our plans to lull ourselves into the illusion of control. In the short term, we can overcome anxiety. But when life throws a curveball, our plans usually collapse.

We all afraid of the unknown, like future, an awaited diagnosis, or even tomorrow. We make the assumption that if we work harder and make plans for everything, we'll have more control over our life and future. But that's rarely true. The moment one thing goes wrong, everything else begins to unravel. Planning every hour of our day becomes a coping mechanism to manage anxiety about the future, and because of this we'll be more frustrated. What was meant to solve the problem ended up becoming the problem itself.

At this moment we try to course-correct and redesign our plans, but now we feel that we are late, so the frustration intensifies. Again. Some people end up in a life where they plan every hour of their day, and it's bacame a coping mechanism to deal with their dread about tomorrow.

Maybe we don't need to think ahead that much. We need to be aware of our life, we need goals and plans, but we have to get rid of overplanning. For that we need all the courage we can muster to stop trying to control every detail. Only then might the anxiety begin to fade.
