What is the most important to learn a foreign language ?

I've learn most of my foreign languages by traveling.
In fact, I grew up on a sailing boat and most of the people my family was meeting weren't speaking french at all. That's why I started learning english. At the begining I was very shy, and it was very difficult to comunicate with adults, but childrens were different. As a child, it was easy to play, even with friends who were not speaking the same language.
Later, I did a lot of linguistic travel, staying in host famillies for 2 up to 10 months. That's how I've learned german and japanese.

So, I belive the most important to study a foreign language is to speak and hear this language. The most important is not to be perfect from the beggining, but understandable.
Now that I can express myself i want to improve my grammar, but I don't think there is any advantage to start by studiing the grammar like we are doing at school.
