Have you ever tried Mr Tu's taxi?

In its "Good News" column, the Süddeutsche newspaper reports that Taipei's taxi booking app now also offers the option of ordering a Karaoke taxi, apart from typical special requests like an English speaking driver or a wheelchair suitable vehicle.

Allegedly, Mr Tu is Taipei's most famous karaoke driver. His taxi is equipped with external loudspeakers so that when he encourages his passengers to sing during the ride, not only the passenger, but also people on the street will be entertained. He often records his passengers singing and uploads the videos to Youtube, where some of the recordings receive more than a million views. He offers discounts or even free rides to those who sing, but he reports that the tips he receives from happy passengers often exceed the original taxi fee.

Is anything like this thinkable in Germany? Absolutely not. Germans typically believe to be bad singers and feel very uncomfortable when they have to sing in public. I have never heard of a German inviting his friends to sing Karaoke and I believe that the few Karaoke parlours existing in this country are mostly patronized by Asian clients. It was a huge culture shock for me when I was invited to play Karaoke in Asia for the first time.
