Custom in Europe

It is the norm in Europe that you show guests all around your house first when you invite them to your home. When I was invited to a friend’s house in Germany, they took me around the house from the bedroom to a storeroom in the basement. I was surprised that all the rooms are neat and cleaned up. I feel a bit embarrassed now to remember that I locked them in the guestroom and could not afford to show them around the house when I invited them to my house before that.

It is the norm in Europe, that youo show guests all around your house first when you invite them to your home.

I was surprised that all the rooms awere neat and cleaned up.

The first verb in the sentence is in the past, the second verb should agree with the first verb since this visit occurred in the past.
