Crows
In a small town not far from where I live, a stroller called the fire brigade because he was observing a bird hanging upside down in a tree and making noises that sounded to him like shouting for help.
The fire brigade arrived on the scene with its turnable ladder. Under the watchful eyes of a large crowd of crows in the trees and curious onlookers in the street, a fireman was able to put the bird back into its nest.
The fireman reported that the young crow had tried to fly out from its nest, but one of its legs was trapped in plastic garbage its parents had obviously used for building the nest. He wished to thank the resident of a neighboring house for lending a nail clipper to cut the garbage, as the fire truck was not well equipped for this kind of delicate rescue activities.
The commander of the fire brigade commented that volunteering to be a fireman means offering help to whomever was in need of it and that this offer is not restricted to humans.
I am happy to contribute to a society where sending a large firetruck to help a little bird is absolutely normal. On the other hand, it is a shame that the convenience we enjoy by the large amount of disposable plastic items we use every day means danger or even death to other creatures.

Er wollte einem Anwohner für das Leihen einer Nagelknipse danken, weil sein Feuerwehrauto für solch filigrane Einsätze nicht gut ausgerüstet war.
Der Kommandeur der Feuerwehr kommentierte, dass man sich zur freiwilligen Feuerwehr meldet, um allen in Not zu helfen, und dass Hilfe nicht auf Menschen beschränkt ist.
Ich bin froh, zu einer Gesellschaft beizutragen, wo es ganz normal ist, ein riesiges Feuerwehrfahrzeug loszuschicken, um einem kleinen Vogel zu helfen. Andererseits ist es eine Schande, dass die Bequemlichkeit, die wir dank der großen Mengen an Plastik-Wegwerfartikeln genießen, für andere Lebewesen Gefahr oder sogar Tod bedeutet.

Alas, no! Just because this word forms part of an object does not mean it is not the subject of an inner clause. Imagine: "He didn't see [the cat who caught the mouse]." The cat is being used as a subject in the clause that identifies which cat it is, so we use "who". Here, the verb is "to be in need of help", so this should be whoever. It's "[volunteering...] means [offering help to [whoever was in need of it]]".
