You can also use "then". Here, it's sort of like adding だから or なんだ to the beginning of a sentence in colloquial speech to imply new or unexpected information.
B gave the movie a 7, which A said was low, but A's own score was 8, only 1 point higher. However, A's enthusiasm implies that A does not think their own rating is low, and the "so" is emphasis on this seemingly double standard. Or at least that was my interpretation of the conversation, so I felt that adding "so" would make it flow better.
