In this semester, I took this class and I studied a lot of things that compared to Canada and Japan. I will focus on power distance among all the things that I studied about in this class and I’ll write about this final reflection paper.
I could say power distance is closely related to individualism. I analyzed the power distance is inverse to individualism. Venezuela ranks 5th place in the power distance index, while it ranks 65th place out of 65 countries in individualism. However, countries that were in the bottom of Power Distance Index were in individualism, they were at the top of the index. Especially, that anglophone countries such as the U.S., Canada, Australia and the U.K. Western countries rank higher than Asian countries with regard to individualism. In fact, Asian countries puts duty the seniority including Japan. In contrast, Western countries tend to be the merit system. I think this results are related to national characters. In the United States, which has the highest indivdualism index, they cannot be active without own opinions. In the U.S., positiveness is one of the most important things for them so in our image of American people are very friendly and the major of people are extroverts. I can say Canada also the same situation. On the other hand, most people in Japan are introverted. As the background, in Japanese society, there is a tendency to be in tune with others rather than to be proactive. It’s an important environment to consider how the other person feels more than self-assertiveness so their character is a little bit different from friendly. Although sometimes foreign people say the national character is polite. While there is no right or wrong between power level indicates, but in my opinion, low power distance is better than high one because mostly these countries people can maintain a healthy work life balance. For example, they can easy to get childcare leave, sick leave and paid leave. Also, although this has been eased in recent years, in Japan, subordinates were not allowed to leave before their superiors. In countries where the Power Distance Index is low, productivity is more important than having to work the prescribed working hours. The environment is made that pay off all own hard work.
In conclusion, I were able to find differences between Canada and Japan. I felt it related to the social. Japan is a racially homogeneous nation and an island nation that values old-fashioned ways and courtesies. While Canada is a multi national country and accept many immigrants. There is a mixture of cultures and customs from various countries. As a result, I felt that an environment where people can work comfortably is being created. Both countries has advantages each other but I believe that Japan needs to be more flexible in its thinking, and while respecting tradition, it also needs to innovate for a better society.
