Narita Airport was noisy and bustling. A group of young men walked alongside the police, each wearing a black headband on their arm, perhaps a clumsy attempt to conceal their handcuffs. The police officer passed around a stack of passports and tickets, loudly calling out each name.
Their mouths ticked off the roll call, and their hands returned the "certificate of identity" that a long time ago those younger men had torn away themselves. Back then, when they had torn it, their eyes clouded by greed, sweat pouring down as they desperately hoped for a quick escape. Now, they were unintentionally caught, or that is what they want to see themselves as. This place is no longer a refuge, so they return to where they grew up, hoping to start a new life.
On the other side, prison awaits, family awaits, and the future awaits. Perhaps it would have been better to continue being lost on this side.
I saw many young people similar to those in Japan when I went to a Vietnamese restaurant and traveled around Japan. Together talked, together drank, and all of them spoke so badly that they ran away and couldn't come back to their present whenever. But only some of them made it. The others are still wandering, lost somewhere.
