Lost in the airport

This wasn't the first time I travelled, in fact, it was like the 4-5 time, but I was my first time being in a gargantuan airport, there was even a train in there.
I've checked multiple times the map to find my gate, I even counted the time I had to eat something while I waited for the time to abord the plane.
But nothing was of use when I actually arrived. There were lots of people, then I had the brilliant idea of following them maybe some of them where to a connection and I will be able to see the signal and follow my path. I didn't take in account that never ever should follow anyone in an airport, everybody has their own time/schedule/plan.
But well, there was I, just following random persons in the hope to see the signal for connection. Later, got called for a friend he said that he was nearby (because he lives near the airport and I told him the time I would arrive) and he wanted to invite me something to eat, and free food is always worth.
The thing was that while I was walking around to find the place to eat (even though it was inside the airport) I got out of the secure zone(?), the place you enter after passing security, and I didn't notice. By the time I notice that I had to pass security again it was pretty late. The person at security told me to ask the people if I could pass security first, I did it and they let me but even with that help I did catch the flight.

I had the brilliant idea of leaving my luggage at the airport as they suggest and they lost it, it was a nightmare.

Just to avoid repeating the word "time" again or "waited for boarding to start."

Not sure what "connection" refers to here, maybe "concourse" or "terminal"?

In slangy speech people do drop the "it" and just say "free food is always worth"

I think it's called "restricted area" but honestly I'm not sure. I can tell what you mean by "secure zone" though

By the time I notice that I had to pass security again it was pretty late.

The person at security told me to ask the people if I could pass security first, I did it and they let me through but even with that help I did catch the flight.

I'm confused who the people you were asking are. The people who were waiting in line? I can't tell if you did or didn't catch the flight. Leading up with "but even with that help" makes it sound like you missed the flight. Did you mean to write "didn't catch the flight."?

I had the brilliant idea of leaving my luggage at the airport as they suggest and they lost it, it was a nightmare.
