Dear editor,
It is true that the nursing shortage is getting a big problem all around the world and more nurses are working over shifts due to the low staff the hospitals are facing nowadays. Moreover, working extra hours are leading nurses into burn out. That means that the shortage will continue due to the break downs the nurses would develop, leading them to stop working because of their mental health is having issues. That is why, I totally agree that the human resource area should put more attention on the timings the nurses are being asked to work in hospitals.
First, it is well known that overworked could lead to burn out. On November 2024, The Institute of Global Mental Health published an article about how working more than 8 hours each day, could increase with 50% the chances on developing a mental illness, such as burn out, anxiety and bipolar disorder. On this context, I believe that the schedule for nurses should be reduced to 8 hours shifts, and nurses must not be allowed to work more than 12 hours per day.
On the other hand, the cost of living and the low payments could lead nurses to work more time, regardless the Institute of Mental Health recommendations. In those cases, the main purpose for those nurses is to bring enough money to their families. As an example, In Mexico, The Science Institute, interviewed five hundred nurses in a public hospital about how many hours they worked per week the last month and the reason for that. The results were that above 60% of the nurses made from 10 to 15 extra hours per week last month. The main reasons were the following: 50% of the nurses felt the necessity to overwork in order to cover their daily expenses, 30% were been ask for the hospital to stay longer, and 20% did not have a specific reason. In conclusion, some nurses are not force to work more but they need to, or they want to. That is why I agree that better working conditions should be added at the health care system over the world in order to prioritize the mental health on nurses regardless external considerations.
