This year I got less gifts than usual, but I like them a lot. I was given money and biker shorts.
I wanted money because I can spend it in what I really need or want. That way, if I go out with friends, I can pay with my own money. I was thinking of buying some brush pens and pastel highlighters too. However, what I really need are headphones, as the ones I have are broken.
I asked my mom for biker shorts because regular shorts don't prevent my thighs from touching, so they get hurt from walking. Now, I will be able to exercise, use my treadmill and walk my dog without the pain. I'm so excited to wear them!

"What I really need" is a noun clause (a group of words that act as a subject or an object in a sentence). The verb "to be" in this sentence is related to the noun clause ("what I really need") which is singular, so you use "is" instead of "are".
I asked my mom for biker shorts because regular shorts don't prevent my thighs from touching, so they get hurt from walking.
This is correct but sounds a little unnatural. Maybe a better way to express this would be something like this:
"I asked my mom for biker shorts because with regular shorts my thighs are touching each other and after walking for a while it starts to hurt."
Now, I will be able to exercise, use my treadmill and walk my dog without the pain.
I'm so excited to wear them!
