Chapter VI

Heinrich lifted his head from a fluffy pillow with difficulty. It was pleasantly dark around him, but the rays of light sneaking past the edges of the drawn curtains sufficed for him to recognise his hotel room.

Relieved, he sank back into the soft down. His body felt as exhausted as if he had swum several kilometres the day before. His tendons burned, his muscles were tired and the blanket was so heavy on his chest and limbs that it took all his strength to feel for the necklace around his neck. When he couldn’t find it, he remembered that the ring was on his finger.

He fidgeted with the ring before lowering his hand again. The movement was so strenuous that Heinrich took a deep breath. The air in the room was cool and smelled of soap. He himself smelled of soap, no longer of blood and sweat. He was naked and his skin no longer felt sticky and salty. Nor was there any taste of blood or salt in his mouth.

While he was feeling his cut with the fingers of his left hand, he heard a church tower bell ringing a half hour. However, he didn’t know which half hour. It didn’t matter. Regardless of the time of day, he felt like he needed more sleep.

Heinrich stretched out, felt a pleasant shiver as the cool blanket brushed over his bare skin, rolled to his side and gave a start. Somebody was sitting in the armchair at the foot of the bed.

I'm not sure if Start is the right word here. Perhaps you mean to say, "... gave a stare."
