"Essays" in the Anglo-Saxon world don't have anything to do with what is called an "essais" in French. In the French literary tradition, "essais" are entire books where authors develop a whole thesis to state their opinions about a particular topic. The closest equivalent to what students of English-speaking countries do at school or in college is "une rédaction" or "une dissertation" (when it's more developped), and still, these aren't the same things, so keeping the English word "essay" would be the best solution IMO
