Career paths and performance at school

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" Some of us had the perfect answer to this question as a pupil, others detested it. The question is really - do we have to know what our career path will look like at such a young age? For me, my dream job has changed quite a bit, before I settled in my dream to become an author in fourth grade. Prior to that I wanted to be a ballet dancer, a princess, an oceanographer, run a pet hotel and become an opera singer. And I'm certain I'm not the only one with such unique job ideas. Now comes the problem: to be able to study a certain topic at university, you will have to reach a matching GPA. For me, my dream of going to university and studying literature made me realise in 8th grade that I have to pull myself together, in order to apply to my dream university. Before 8th grade, I was not -let's say- a very diligent student. I loved to read - I inhaled many books from our school library, but I did not put that much of an effort into my performance at school itself. I realized the potential risk of me not being able to go to university early enough and I still had time to make a change. But I find it problematic and also trubbling for those, who did not realize it soon enough. Childhood and especially puperty can be a hard time, where you struggle with your identity, your body, but also with your mental health and confidence. It is a shame that your bad phase in puperty can have this much of an impact on where your career path is gonna take you. It is also depressing to see some students not being encouraged in their strengths and interests, especially if they are unconventional. I would have loved the concept of clubs at my school , but in germany clubs are not really a thing. Clubs could be able to motive students furthermore to try out new things, deepen their knowledge in the things they find fascinating, but also find other students, who share the same passions. Working together with peers could motivate each other through that.
