When I was a teenager, living in the countryside in summer was a lot of fun: catching cicadas, swimming in rivers, shooting birds and sleeping outside.
Today, let me talk about sleeping outside.
In the middle of May, it was already summer, and wheat was almost ripe. In order to prepare for harvesting wheat, the adults started making threshing ground.
They looked for a piece of space ground on the field, flattened and wet the ground, then evenly placed wheat straw on the ground and rolled the ground by a stone roller. Then the threshing ground was made, its surface was very even and there were no cracks on it. So when people threshed the wheat, the wheat seeds won’t lose.
Every night, almost all the teenagers in my village would like to sleep on the ground. After they ate dinner, they carried a mat, a quilt and maybe a pillow to the ground.
The mat was made of reeds and its shape was a rectangle. When they took these things out to the ground, they used their two arms to hold the quilt and the pillow, and with the reed mat on their heads.
When teenagers slept on the ground, they stayed up very late because they would like to talk to each other until they felt sleepy. They usually told the stories that they heard from the adults and the stories were mostly related to legends, ghosts, and stars in the sky.
Sometimes, they would go to other villages to watch movies if they heard the sounds of a power generator. If so, they often returned back at midnight.
Sleeping outside on the ground, they could hear the insects whispering, feel the breeze flowing and watch the moon and stars shining. But they also had to suffer the mosquitoes, and the dews in the early morning.
Although they often woke up early in the morning because of the wet quilt, and suffered the mosquitoes in the fields, the primitive “camping” still brought them unforgettable memories.
