Why I don't read news

It's been more than a year since I've completely stopped reading, watching and listening to news. Actually, I deleted all my social media accounts around the same, but it is a story for another post. I feel like news has become such an entrenched part of our culture that it may seem impossible to quit. One of the main reasons for that is that many people dread to miss out on something crucial. They believe that the news they everyday is something of utter importance, something that will significantly affect their own lives. Additionally, how can you not know what is happening in the world?
I lived with a similar mindset for quite a while and ultimately understood that I need some change. I was wasting at least half an hour daily on news articles, which is not that much time in comparison to some people. However, I noticed that these 30 minutes of scrolling never boosted my mood; instead, I was getting rather anxious and unhappy about things I can't do anything about. I also understood that truly influental things happen only a few times a year, not everyday. As an experiment, I stopped consuming news for a week without telling anyone. Waiting to lose all my social connections, I surprusingly found out that literally nothing has changed.
After eliminating all news from my life, I freed up plenty of time for some of my other interests and focused on the things I can actually change. It was one of the best decisions in my life, and I would definitely recommend to at least try it out.
