A torch is a light carried in the hand, but it's called a flashlight in America.
A car park is where you park your car, but it's called a parking lot in America.
A petrol station is a facility which sells fuel, but it's called gas station in America.
English learners take them as synonymous.
English is the bastard child of 5 other languages: Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, and Old Germanic.
Plant and medical terms come from Latin.
Words related to meat come from French, such as pigeon, pork, beef, mutton and venison.
Words like espresso and cappuccino come from Italian.
Mosquitoes and cannibals come from Spanish.
The British need to stop acting like their version is something great.

But in any case, British and American English are mutually intelligible.
I tend to pronounce in the British way when speaking, but I usually tend to spell in the American when writing.
