Book - A Shot in the Dark - P20

Watching the (theatre) play, Steine grows more and more impatient; he has been right all along about its ugliness. As for Twitten, he does not know what to make of it; many people are leaving in disgust, but he cannot dismiss this sense of newness about it. He cannot help noticing Crystal is not making any notes as well; Crystal is well known to trust his memory, and has always proved himself. About twenty minutes in, something must have caught* his eye; he goes rigid in his seat and calls out “That’s it!”. Twitten is bewildered; “was it something in the play? I didn’t see anything wrong”, his only thought. Crystal hastily produces a piece of paper and scribbles something down. Twitten then manages to ask if Crystal is all right, but unfortunately he will not be getting** an answer; what happens next will always be unclear for him. To be honest, it is not his fault; he cannot see that coming; he cannot expect to witness the murder of the man sitting next to him; indeed, the great theatre critic A.S. Crystal is shot dead. Twitten is dazed; gloomy figures screaming and running in panic; Tony, on stage, crying out loud “What the hell! I didn’t think...”. Twitten will later recall Crystal uttering these very words : “I knew it! Tell Inspector Steine from me he’s even more of a fool”. To Twitten’s credit, he manages to find and take the murder weapon from the floor despite all the chaos. As he does so, he notices that the piece of paper is still in Crystal’s.
