When Mrs Groynes had explained to Constable Twitten the background to Crystal’s murder, Twitten felt relieved to have gained such a unique insight into Joanna Carver. And yet, there still was a lingering sense of unease, of something not quite right. If Mrs Groynes were to be believed, Twitten reasoned, she should look distraught, grieving for Bobby’s brutal death. Instead, she was all matter-of-fact. Twitten voiced as much to Mrs Groynes. She admitted that the shooting had been a ruse—as Twitten had always suspected—and that Bobby and Joanna were already on their way to France. Twitten couldn’t bear the thought that he had been outwitted by Mrs Groynes once again.
