Summary no. 77
Mrs Groynes was more and more on the verge of being exposed by Twitten’s findings. Although she thought it impossible that Inspector Steine and Sergeant Brunswick would buy into any theory of Twitten’s, she took no risks. She intended to get all of them to the hippodrome show of the evening. Once there, Bobby Melma, a phrenologist as well as a member of her gang, would hypnotise Twitten on stage and get him to say, “Mrs Groynes is a wicked criminal.” She was sure no one would ever believe Twitten after that. Nevertheless, she first had to make sure to have all of them there. Twitten was the easiest because she had already had him abducted. As for Inspector Steine, she had to lure him there. She sat in the office opposite his, near enough for him to overhear her. She then pretended to have a call about a surprise event for Steine at the hippodrome. Sure enough, when she later asked him out to the hippodrome, he quickly said “yes”. Even a kid would be able to deceive Inspector Steine.
