Book - A Shot in the Dark - 70

Summary no. 70

Although Sergeant Brunswick had been in the office for a couple of hours, only now did it dawn on him that constable Twitten hadn’t called* in yet. Actually, he hadn’t seen Twitten since the day Crystal was murdered. Everyone at the station had been so caught up with the ongoing investigations that Twitten’s absence had passed unnoticed. When Brunswick expressed as much to Mrs Groynes, the station cleaner, she merely dismissed the matter, remarking that Twitten wasn’t cut out for the job and had probably dropped out of the police. Still, it niggled at Brunswick not knowing exactly; something terrible might’ve happened to the boy.

As arranged, Brunswick stayed on because he was waiting for a call from the Leeds Police. However, Mrs Groynes couldn’t let him take that call, and she came up with an idea to get him out of the way. Making the most of her deceiving skills, she put on a show pretending that she’d forgotten that Vince had called earlier to report Masie, Brunswick’s lover, was in trouble. Sure enough, Brunswick fell for it. He instructed Mrs Groynes to pick up the call on his behalf and then set off in search of Masie.

*By “called in”, I meant “to go to work”. Given the context, is it clear what I meant?
