Book - A Shot in the Dark - 63

Summary no. 63

Constable Twitten carried on outlining his reasoning to Mrs Groynes, who still was pointing the gun at him. Twitten was adamant that Mrs Groynes had been in charge of all criminal activities in the whole of Brighton ever since the notorious Middle Street Massacre—in which all of her rival gangs were wiped out. All along, she had operated undisturbed from the heart of the local law enforcement, working at the Brighton police station as a cleaner. She’d got close to Inspector Steine and Sergeant Brunswick, and would thus have learnt about police investigations’ progress and spread rumours to her own advantage. For example, she had probably fuelled the rumour that Terense Chambers was behind the Middle Streed Massacre. Yet Twitten believed Chambers and Mrs Groynes had once been close. Twitten put their parting ways down to the Albion Bank robbery. Chambers had planned the robbery for the 17th, but she anticipated him and robbed the bank on the 16th. Twitten couldn’t understand why she’d do that. No one would want to make an enemy of Chambers. However, it did clear up why she’d gone to such lengths to cover up her tracks. She didn’t fear being arrested, she dreaded Chambers finding out.
