This book is about "how to study well" and I decided to take this one because, as self-taught learner by preference, my two main problems can be sumarized in: "what's the correct thing to learn" and "how to do it efficiently". I'll focus for now in the last one.
The premise of the book is that anyone can improve its current studyng methods regardless of how good student has been in the past. The most useful concept of the book for me by far is "Toggling Your Thinking". There are two indentified modes of thinking:
- Focused mode: When you are dealing with a logical problem. Great for rational and sequential thinking.
- Diffuse mode: The one by default when no specific task has been assigned. Great for getting the "big picture" and gathering ideas from unexpected places.
Switching between this two modes is, in general, what makes you good at science. This can be exemplified in those moments when a topic is extremely confusing and you get stuck, then it's recomended to take a break and relax for a moment (mental switch). In diffuse mode, it's possible to approach the topic in new creative ways to explain it, examplify it or find how it's related with something you already know.
