To talk about an action, it is more usual to use the neutral "lo" instead of "el".

The verb "ser" refers to a qualification, and the qualification here is to be better, so you can't use a verb after "ser". The quality here is "mejores". You can say "seamos mejores", but I think that "Mejoremos" express the same idea and sounds better.
