*TOKiMONSTA
TOKiMONSTA and Tinashe have given Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” a new flip.
The Grammy-nominated producer took to Instagram today to announce that her reimagination of “I’m Every Woman” with Tinashe was released yesterday. It is included in an album called “Music For the Movement Vol. 2,” which was released via the music label, The Undefeated.
Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” set the charts alight around the globe when it was released in 1978. It skyrocketed to international fame once again when the one and only Whitney Houston covered it for the movie “The Bodyguard” in 1992.
“When @tinashenow asked me to produce a track as part of @undefeatedespn’s “BLACK HISTORY ALWAYS” EP, ya’ll know I was downnnn,” TOKiMONSTA said. “I’m eternally grateful to be able to pay tribute to @chakaikhan with our specially reimagined version of ‘I’m Every Woman.’”
The Korean-American producer/DJ, who has been close with Tinashe since her “2 On” remix in 2014, is currently having a vacation in South Korea.
*Neon Bunny
Neon Bunny has dropped her 3rd studio album, “KOSMOS,” today. For those who don’t know her, she is a well-known artist among Korean indie band/dance music fans for her mystic ambient music; she even won the Best Pop Album category in the 2012 Korean Music Awards for her first album, “Seoulight.”
So, “KOSMOS” consists of 9 tracks spanning indie band, downtempo and ambient style tracks. To be fair, most of them are indie band-influenced songs. And these tracks are easy to listen to even though they are not that special or jaw-dropping. In particular, the jazz-infused first track “Call You” is really nice to listen to while relaxing.
On the flip side, though, I’m not a big fan of a few EDM-influenced tracks and even think that they ruined the quality of the album. To be specific, I think the lead synths springing up in the chorus of the third track, “Apartment Heaven,” are weird and off the mark. And the fourth track, “Call You,” honestly reminds me of subpar progressive house tracks from 2011 to 2013.
On top of that, her vocal abilities are a bit disappointing. I admit that she has a nice silky voice that’s pleasant to listen to, but I don’t think that she has the chops to pull off genres that require great vocal skills. (But at the same time, I feel like I have to give her some slack because she’s originally a pianist.)
As a conclusion, I think that this album would’ve been a really solid album for people who are into ambient, indie band style music only if she had excluded the aforementioned tracks and worked a little bit more on her vocals.
