The first language I learned was Mandarin since it's the official language of our country.
I've been studying English since 1994 and French since 2024.
If you can only speak Mandarin, you can only communicate with Mandarin speakers.
If you can speak French and English, you can communicate with about 80% of people all over the world, across different cultures, countries and continents.
I discovered some interesting facts.
The English-speaking world should be grateful to French.
It's thanks to French that English is international.
About 30% of the vocabulary in modern English comes from French, and that's huge.
French speakers are always dropping the "H" sound.
In the English-speaking world, there are still some people insisting on saying "an hotel" or "an historic", treating the H as silent. I think "an historic" is more poetic.
In words like Graham, Buckingham, and Birmingham, the "h" became silent primarily due to the influence of Old French.

Technically the English language only has as much French vocabulary as it does because the French (the Normans) invaded and took over England - I'm not sure if that is something we should be grateful for, even if it profoundly impacted the English language and helped shape it into what it is today. Great writing, and a very interesting topic :)
