Astringent Persimmon
My mother’s friend gave us 3 fine persimmons.
Those were big and it looked delicious.
The friend said, “You can eat it with a spoon after fully ripening.”
After 2 weeks, I touched it and found that it had become softer than before, so we decided to try it.
I cut a persimmon in half and my mother took a bite with a spoon.
Then soon she made a weird face, and spat it out.
She said, “This is terrible, my mouth is very numb, like when I had an anesthesia at the dentist.”
It was astringent persimmons.
Then we remembered that my mother’s friend said, “after fully ripening.”
Looks like we should have waited longer.
I doubt whether this persimmon will actually become be sweet, though…
It was a lesson for gluttons. Wait long enough!
渋柿
母が友だちから立派な柿を3つもらってきた。
とても大きくて美味しそうに見えた。
ずくずくになるまで良く熟してからスプーンですくって食べると良いよと言われたらしい。
2週間ほど経ったので触ってみたら少し柔らかくなっていたので、食べてみることにした。
包丁で半分に切ってから母がスプーンで一口食べた。
すぐに変な顔をして吐き出した。
その後、水ですすいで「これは酷い、歯医者で麻酔を打った時のように口の中が痺れている」と言った。
渋柿だったらしい。
そういえば、母の友だちは「良く熟してから」食べるようにと言っていた。もっと待ってないといけなかったようだ。
この柿が本当に甘くなるのか疑問だけども､､､
食いしん坊には教訓になった。十分に待てってね！

Yikes! Maybe the other ones will sweeten up in the next couple days or weeks. I wonder if there's an easy way to tell whether they're ready to eat without cutting one open.
