"When did you realise you were aromantic ?"

It's actually a story that I wanted to tell for a long time.

Before college, I wasn't really aware of the LGBTQ+. They existed, good for them, period. But in college, I made a bunch of friends who were in the community. I watched them grow, discover themself. Expecially a guy I was really close with, Martin.
First time I met him, he thought he was a lesbian, because it was clear for him that he liked women. Then, he realised he was not a girl, and identified as agender for 6 months. Meanwhile, he also discovered that he was on the asexual spectrum. Finally, he came out as trans, demi-sexual and panromantic.

He inspired me. He made me realised that there were a lot of different sexuality/gender/romantism, and that people don't always have a "oh yeah, I'm ..." moment. Sometimes (most of the time), you have to question your sexuality/gender/romantism to find it, and the first guess isn't necessary the right one.

So I did some research. I looked at some memes, some posts, some forums... Until I found the aromantic definission. That ringed a bell. I read stories from people, and I recognise myself in them. I always thought that people were thinking the same way as me, but then I found out that that was not "heteronormal".

I didn't immediatly think to myself "That's it. I'm aromantic!", it took several months before I got used to the idea, and a couple of more before I trully accepted it and identify myself as aro. So I can't really put a date on it, but it was somewhere between at the beginning of 2020 (yes, just before the pandemic).

"When did you realise you were aromantic ?

Before college, I wasn't really aware of the LGBTQ+ community.

Saying "LGBTQ+" here sounds awkward without saying the word community afterwards. Think about it - you wouldn't say "Before college, I wasn't really aware of the lesbian", right?

They existed, good for them, period.

But in college, I made a bunch of friends who were in the community.

I watched them grow, and discover themselfves.

Expecially a guyA guy that I was really close with, Martin., had especially evident growth.

What you wrote wasn't a full sentence, so I changed it into a full sentence.

First time I met him, he thought he was a lesbian, because it was clear for him that he liked women.

This is correct, but this might be confusing for people who don't know that he had previously identified as a girl, since the term lesbian is used for women who are attracted to other women, and you used male pronouns.

Then, he realised he was not a girl, and identified as agender for 6 months.

Meanwhile, he also discovered that he was on the asexual spectrum.

Finally, he came out as trans, demi-sexual and panromantic.

He inspired me.

He made me realised that there were a lot of different sexualityies/genders/romantic attractionsm, and that people don't always have a "oh yeah, I'm ..." moment.

I made "sexuality" and "gender" plural, because you said "there were a lot of different..." (which then requires a plural noun)
also, the correct term for what you wrote (romantism) would be "romantic attraction(s)"

Sometimes (most of the time), you have to question your sexuality/gender/romantismc attraction to find it out, and the first guess isn't necessary the right one.

So, I did some research.

I looked at some memes, some posts, and some forums... U until I found the aromantic definission.out what being aromantic means.

That ringed a bell.

I read stories from people, and I recognise myself in them.

I always thought that people were thinking the same way as me, but then I found out that that was not "heteronormal".

I didn't immediately think to myself, "Tthat's it.

I'm aromantic!

", it took several months before I got used to the idea, and a couple of more months before I trully accepted it and identifyied myself as aro.

So I can't really put a date on it, but it was somewhere between at the beginning of 2020 (yes, just before the pandemic).

Feedback

It was really interesting to read about your journey! You are right, your sexuality/gender/etc. isn't always something that you realize right away! Nice writing!
