An Embarrassing Moment

When I ran in the Kumamoto Castle Marathon three weeks ago, I dressed up as a famous anime character and received a lot of cheers from spectators, many of whom were children. I felt happy and waved back to those people.
"Anpanman, ganbare! ("Anpanman, fight!")
I waved back to those people for a while, but suddenly, I realized that I was dressed as Doraemon, not Anpanman. I then noticed that a runner dressed as Anpanman was running right behind me.
"Oops, they were cheering for him, not me."
I got confused between Anpanman and Doraemon, and I felt so embarrassed.
After I calmed down, I realized that Anpanman is more popular than Doraemon among Japanese kids.
For the rest of the race, I found myself thinking about what costume I should wear in my next marathon.
I'd like to be the most popular anime character next time.
Hahaha

When I ran in the Kumamoto Castle Marathon three weeks ago, I dressed up as a famous anime character and received a lot of cheers from spectators, many of whom were children.

I felt happy and waved back to those people.

"Anpanman, ganbare!

("Anpanman, fight!")

頑張れ isn’t actually “fight” in english, it would sound better to say something like “try your best, anpanman!” or “you can do it, anpanman!” you should look this up, i think it’s a very interesting thing in english.

I waved back to those people for a while, but suddenly, I realized that I was dressed as Doraemon, not Anpanman.

I then noticed that a runner dressed as Anpanman was running right behind me.

"Oops, they were cheering for him, not me."

I realized that I got confused between Anpanman and Doraemon, and I felt so embarrassed.

For the rest of the race, I found myself thinking about what costume I should wear infor my next marathon.

I'd like to be the most popular anime character next time.

When you wear a costume, we say you are "dressed up as" and not just "dressed as". You can also say more simply "I went as Doraemon"

Thank you for your corrections and comment!
I'm thinking about Darth Vader, Spiderman, Batman, Super Mario Broth. etc. but I'm not sure if they are popular among Japanese kids.
Maybe Thomas the Tank Engine?
