Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In order for a business to succeed, it must put more money in advertising.

When asked is it must put more money in advertising in order to become successful business, most people strongly support the idea that it should spend big money on it, while some disagree. Personally, I side with the latter. I think it is not necessary to put large amount money in advertising.

Firstly, putting more money on increasing quality of product will bring business to succeed. Rather buying a beautiful product, people choose a high quality one. A business improve a product’s quality is beneficial to them, because it will attract more and more customer and keep the customer in long term as well. Iphone, for instance, Apple is one of successful technology companies in the world. It puts a big amount of money on enhancing the quality of iphone’s system, applications, appearance and so on in order to cause much more people’s interests. This strategy totally works, since once most people use iPhone, they are not willing to use others companies’ since they are already used to iPhone’s system. So, focusing on quality leads a business to succeed.

Secondly, they said, producing a product is people looking for. People always buy a product that is practical, convenient and facilitative. In other words, they dislike a good that is difficult to use, hard to carry. If a business yearns to succeed, they must spend a lot money on designing a product that customers are easy to use. A case in point, in the past, people were using CD player for listening; however, they are using MP3 which is easier to carry around and light. A company who made MP3 was producing a product that people think is practical, so it is worth to invest money on it.

Admittedly, some people might say that it must put more money in advertising in order for business to succeed, it will either boost their brands or create a trend. For example, a coke company sponsored a celebrity to endorse their product. The well-known person took a photo, post on the social media, and tried to attract people to buy it. The company spent money on the celebrity, attempting to advertise people. However, the action of putting much more money in advertising will not lead a business to succeed, since a company should focus on their product’s quality and practical utility. These definitely bring a far benefit to a company, after all.

Interesting topic! I don't necessarily agree with you, though. You should check out a book called emotional design. It's all about how utility isn't all that matters - aesthetics and desirability all matter when people choose a product. I also think that this overlooks some key points about advertising, even in your examples; for example, Apple DOES put a lot of money into its product... But Apple also had some of the most iconic advertising campaigns in history (dancing silhouettes for the iPod), and the brand itself is incredibly recognizable, particularly because the design is so uniform. Think back to the colorful iMacs, and all of the sleek silver Macbooks of today.

I moved from product into sales and marketing, and here's what I'd say from my experience: having a solid product gets you half of the way there. But you need to get people to fall in love with it, ESPECIALLY when you have stiff competition. They need to understand why the service you provide is valuable and solves a problem that they have. Apple does this really, really well, and I think it's unfair to say that it's all happening on the product side!
