The zu-clause at the end (btw, the correct version would be "mir zu helfen") doesn't quite work since the subjects of the main clause (ich) and the zu-clause (der Freund) are different. So I swapped out the zu-clause for a relative clause instead. (Nice catch on using the dative with helfen!)
