A Short History of the EU(1)

European Coal and Steel Community was founded on 18 April 1951 with the Treaty of Paris, following Robert Schuman’s proposal. Founding states were Federal Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, France and Luxembourg. In 1957 the “Six” set up the European Atomic Energy Community, the latter involving common policies on trade and agriculture, and abolishment of custom duties inbetween.

In 1973 first enlargement of EEC took place by the joining of Denmark, UK and Ireland. In June 1979 the first elections to the European Parliament was held. In 1980’s joined Greece, Spain and Portugal. With the addition of southern states, grew more need to regional aid programmes. In 1980s presented itself a wave of “europessimism” during the worldwide economic recession. To tackle this mindset, published the European Comission a White Paper, setting out a goal of completing European single market by 1993.
