China has a zero temperature line from east to west. In the southern part of the line, it's said that even on the coldest days, the temperature there won't be below zero, so houses there don't need to be heated during the winter.
Where I live is on the northern part of the zero line, and is around 50 kilometers away from the line. In the winter, the lowest temperature would be around negative 10°, but all the houses here don't have any heating equipment.
As far as I know, in China, houses that are with heating equipment start from the north part of Shandong, Henan and Shanxi provinces, and these provinces are on the northern side of my place.
Getting back to the 70's, living conditions in the countryside of China were very poor. People had little money. They would feel very painful if they bought washing powder.
To save money, they preferred using homemade "plant ash water".
At that time, people used crop straw to set fire to cook, so there were many straw ashes under their pots. When they did the laundry, they folded the straw ashes inside a piece of clothes to make it an ashes-bag, and immersed it in the water that was prepared for washing for ten minutes or so. After that, the ashes-water was done.
I once asked people that could this water clean things? They said the water contained the chemical element "phosphorus" which had the cleaning function.
