朝三暮四
Seeing this idiom, I have to read the story again. In ancient China, a man was very good at breeding monkeys. One year, people were facing a food shortage. To meet the shortage, the man decided to reduce the food quantity for the monkeys. He said to the monkeys, from tomorrow on, I will reduce your food quantity. I would give each monkey three fruits in the morning and four fruits in the afternoon. The monkeys showed dissatisfaction after hearing what the man said. After seeing that, the man immediately said, well, I would give each of you four fruits in the morning and three in the afternoon. Is that okay? The monkeys thought the man added one fruit in the morning, so they were satisfied with that without thinking about the total amount of fruit they would get for the entire day.

He said to the monkeys, from"Starting tomorrow on, I will reduce your food quantitygive you less food.
I wouldill give each monkey three pieces of fruits in the morning and four fruitpieces in the afternoon."
The monkeys showed dissatisfaction after hearing what the man said.

SAfter seeing this idiom, I have to read the story again.
If you want to be more specific, you could call it "the origin story."
In ancient China, a man was very good at breeding monkeys.
One year, people were facing a food shortage.
To meetitigate the shortage, the man decided to reduce the food quantityamount of food for the monkeys.
He said to the monkeys, f"From tomorrow on, I will reduce your food quantity.the amount of your food."
Another more simple option is: "I will give you less food."
I wouldill give each monkey three fruits in the morning and four fruits in the afternoon.
The monkeys showedwere dissatisfactionied after hearing what the man said.
The original sentence is technically correct, but here's another more natural (in my opinion) option.
After seeing that the monkeys were unhappy, the man immediately said, w"Well, I wouldhow about I give each of you four fruits in the morning and three in the afternoon.?
Is that okay?"
(Closing the quote from the previous sentence)
The monkeys thought the man added one fruit in the morning, so they were satisfied with that without thinking abouthat the total amount of fruit they would get for the entire day was the same.

To meet[address | make up for] the shortage, the man decided to reduce the [food quantity | quantity of food] for the monkeys.
He said to the monkeys, f“From tomorrow on, I will reduce your food quantity.

“Three fruits” means three different KINDS of fruit. It could be any number of pieces.
The monkeys showed dissatisfaction after hearing what the man said.
Wow, they can understand Chinese! :-))
After seeing that, the man immediately said, w“Well, I wouldill give each of you four pieces of fruits in the morning and three in the afternoon.
Is that okay?”
The monkeys thought the man (had) added one fruitpiece in the morning, so they were satisfied with that without thinking about the total amount of fruit they would get for the entire day.
Ah, I guess their Chinese comprehension wasn’t that good, after all. ;-)
