A Mystery In Winter

Around this time three years ago, our company held a party for customers at a gorgeous hotel on a Friday. After the party finished, three female coworkers and I went to a nice cafe in another gorgeous hotel.
At the entrance, a waiter came over to us and said, "Your party is five people, right?" We answered, "No, we are four." We looked back and found that no one was there around us. The waiter said sorry and took us to a table.
While we were sitting at a round table, a waitress brought water and put five glasses on the table. We said again, "We are four." The waitress was startled and said sorry, and removed the glass.
We enjoyed nice sweets and tea for a while and left the cafe. We were tired so called a taxi. When we were getting in, the driver said, "Sorry, this car cannot accommodate five people." We said again, "We are four." We turned around and found that no one was around us there. The driver stared at something in a minute and said, "Ah, ok, four people. Please get in."

We were wondering why they counted us five. Have you ever had a mysterious experience?

The next Monday, one of us said that a creepy thing happened to her after that. She is youngest and cutest girl among us. She comes to work from Saitama which is a bit far from Tokyo. After we got out from the taxi at Shinjuku in Tokyo, she got on a train to a station in Saitama.
She usually uses a bicycle between her house and the station. But on that day, she was so tired that she caught a taxi. When she got in the taxi, the taxi driver said, "Is both of you the same destination?" She froze and said nothing. The driver turned around to her and said, "What..? Where is the other girl?  When did she get out before I noticed?" She answered trembling, "I was alone from the beginning. No one was with me."
The driver stared at her eyes and said in a low voice, "It's a joke."

After the party finished, three female coworkers and I went to a nice cafe in another gorgeous hotel.

At the entrance, a waiter came over to us and said, "Your are a party isof five people, right?" We answered, "No, we are four." We looked back and foundehind us and saw that no one was there around us.

The waiter said sorryapologised and took us to aour table.

‘Our table’ since he is designating it to you, so you can say that!

While we were sitting at a round table, a waitress brought water and put five glasses on the table.

We said agOnce again we saind, "Wwe are four." The waitress was startled, and said sorrypologised, and removed the glass.

When multiple things happen in a row, the flow feels smoother when using commas until the last action with an ‘and’.
Another example could be: “I walked in the restaurant, removed my coat, and sat down.”
Like that!

We enjoyed nice sweets and tea for a while and, then left the cafe.

We were tired, so we called a taxi.

Another phrase you could say is ‘hailed a taxi.’ Which is when you wave your hand in front of them in the street.

When we were getting in, the driver said, "Sorry, this car cannot accommodate five people." We said againAgain, we said, "We are four." We turnlooked around and found that no one was around us there.

The driver stared at something infor a minute andthen said, "Ah, ok, four people. Please get in."

We were wondering why they counted ueveryone was counting us as five.

Have you ever had a mysterious experience?

The next Monday, one of the party members that was with us said that a creepy thing happened to her after that.

Thank you fo the correction! I learned an expression, “we are a party of four.” This sound polite to me. I use at a restaurant overseas 😁

Anytime!
Yeah! It’s correct!
It’s formal and the most used in restaurants when costumers come in all over the world!
In some restaurants, they use the informal way, which goes like this:
Waiter: “five?”
You: “four.”
Which is just stating the number! It’s usually used in Arabic restaurants 😌

😆😆😆 Because they don't know the
formal way like us😂 Many of Japanese people say "water, please" at a restaurant overseas but I learned it's childish. We think that just using "please" means polite expressions😆

Wait really? I had no idea it was considered childish!
I think it's polite and cute ^^ I've heard people use it before too!
"Please" definitely is polite!
Sometimes people say "can we get some water [please]?" and it can still be polite either way! 😊

Yeah we learned “please” means polite at school, so we use “please+verb” about anything, anytime, anywhere.
But English teachers at language schools said to use “could/would/will/can you~?” formally as you show an example. Please+verb is a way children say. I try not to often say please+verb recently but try to use can you instead.😁

Yes that’s true!
You’re right! It is still a formal way 😌
Best of luck!
The difference in languages can be so interesting! Sometimes they’re similar, different or completely opposite! It’s fun!
