A Late Evening Post

This will be short, I guess. It's late in the evening, and I'm writing this to continue the streak of three days posting in a row. I didn't think it will be so hard to write a post every day. Usually I write them in morning, but I missed it today, and I have to write it just before I go to sleep. I'm a bit tired so there might be more mistakes than usual. What should I say? I like this website. Thanks to all people who made it and keeps maintaining it, giving everyone an opportunity to improve their language. I realized how it is important to try expressing yourself, without a dictionary using only words you know. Now there is two problems for me: how to discover new words faster and how to improve my speech. I learn new words from writing when people make their suggetstions, but it doesn't happen so often. I try reading books, but it mostly books on programming, that lacks of expressive beautiful words and idioms. And I don't know how to solve the second problem yet. I installed some apps for speaking with natives, but at first glance it seems like there isn't many natives there. What do you do to improve your speech in the language you learn?

I would be very appreciated to read your recommendations. Many thanks.

Good job! I sympathize with your problems. I am working on improving my German speaking skills with tutors on iTalki, but of course that costs money. As for new vocabulary, in addition to the words that come up with my tutors, I learn new words on Seedlang (a language site, but for German only) and from watching Youtube videos such as the ones made by Deutsche Welle (a German broadcaster). I used to also borrow easy books from the library at the Goethe Institute, but now they are closed because of the pandemic.

That's nice. I should watch YouTube more. I'm subscribed to some channels, but I forget to watch videos. Thank you!

May I suggest the BBC's learning English section? www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish. My German coworkers love it. YouTube videos and iTalki are also a great way to learn.

If you prefer reading, libraries are the way to go. The ones in my country take suggestions, so you could try asking your local one to purchase more English books. My local library recently brought a lot of graded readers that range from A1 to B2. Some even have accompanying audio books. :-) A lot of libraries are also offering special services while the lockdown is happening. Mine was offering online registration and was taking suggestions for new e-books.

PS: @Gingerbreadwoman - Have you tried Hueber's range of Deutsch als Fremdsprache books yet? Their German graded readers are great and since everything is explained in German, you can completely immerse yourself in the language. It is tricky to understand everything at first, but I really improved using these types of books. For example, here ist one of their A1 graded readers: https://shop.hueber.de/media/livebook/9783191010225/index.html

Thanks, Spitzname. Yes, when I said "easy books" that's the kind of thing I meant. One of the books I have out from the Goethe Institute, but have been unable to return due to the closure, is a retelling of a Schiller play in the Hueber Deutsch als Fremdsprache series. It even has an audio CD so you can listen as you read.

You weren't wrong, but it sounds better to say "my streak" since you are talking about yours specfically

Now, there isare two problems for methat I'm struggling with: how to discover new words faster and how to improve my speech.

You say "are" instead of "is" because "problems" is plural.
I changed the other part to sound better

I learn new words from writing when people make their suggetstions, but it doesn't happen so often.

I try reading books, but ithey are mostly books on programming, thatwhich lacks of expressive, beautiful words and idioms.

Anytime you have two or more adjectives together, they should be separated by commas. So instead of "expressive beautiful words", it should be "expressive, beautiful words"

And I don't know how to solve the second problem yet.

Try to avoid starting a sentence with "and" if you can

I installed some apps forto speaking with natives, but at the first glance, it seems like there isaren't many natives on there.

"on there" because it is "on an app"

Nice journal!
To learn new words, I watch Netflix with subtitles and pick up new words from seeing them repetitively, or I read something in my German workbook, highlight all the words I don't know, and memorize them using an app called Quizlet.
To practice my speech, luckily my husband and his family are native speakers, so it's pretty easy for me just to talk to them. If you want to do a voice call with someone, you should take a look at Reddit - there's a subreddit for finding language partners, and usually you can also find Discord servers to talk to people in the language you are learning. If you don't want to do this, you can simply talk to yourself outloud!

I use Anki for memorizing words in sentences, to see the context.
Thanks for Reddit. I don't use it often. I thought about Discord, and I even joined LangCorrect server, but I was surprised that there are no voice channels in it.

I agree with Brambsie. :-) I personally like watching films that I'm already familiar with in my native language. I feel less lost when I don't understand something as a result. Talking out loud is also a great way to get you used to a language. I used to trip over my own tongue a lot in German, so I started commenting on what I was doing, for example: "I am washing dishes. It is raining outside. Where did I put the remote? How late is it?" It helps if you have a native speaker to laugh at you on standby. I never forget words after being laughed at. ;-)

If you are looking for a language partner, you could try www.conversationexchange.com. I found a few on there. It will probably take you a few tries before you find someone who will fit with your schedule and time zone, though.

Best of luck learning English! You're already doing great. :-D
