A Heavy Snow

Since yesterday, we have observed the heavy snow in various places of Japan. In general, the northwest and of Japan have the heavy snow. This is because there are high mountain ranges that runs north to south to Japan like spine, and in winter, moist wind from northwest hits them, bringing snow. So, in famous three places of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, Kyoto have relatively more snow because only Kyoto faces the northwest sea. In Maizuru city, the north of Kyoto city, it seems to have had 40 centimeters of snowfall. However, that is not so heavy compared with the Tohoku and Hokuriku region including Aomori and Niigata Prefecture, which have the most amount of snowfall in Japan.

昨日から、日本各地で災害級の積雪量を観測しています。たいてい、日本で降雪が酷いのは北西の地域です。背骨のように南北に連なる山脈があり、冬には北西からの湿った風がそれらに当たって雪を降らせるからです。よって、東京、京都、大阪という有名な３つのエリアの中では、京都が比較的多く雪が降ります。京都だけ北西の海に面しているからです。京都市の北の舞鶴市という所では、４０cmの積雪があったそうです。でも青森県や新潟県といった日本一の豪雪地帯を含む東北地方や北陸地方に比べれば、そこまで酷くありません。
