A Difficult Phrase For Me 4

I ran into the passage which I found difficult while reading a novel.
I need your help to understand it.

I'll give you a rundown of the story so far.

A poor young man, Jamie left his hometown to look for diamonds and get rich.
He managed to find diamonds, but a dirty old mam, Salamon cheated him out of all the diamonds he found.
Jamie succeeded in getting back the diamonds but was assaulted by several men who arranged by Salamon.
Jamie's friend rescued him.
After a year, Jamie's apperance became much different from before.
With a broken nose and white hair, He looked a middle aged man.
Jamie got rich but decided to spend the money for revenge.
Jamie came back to the town where Salamon lives, and waited for him at a bar.
In a while, Salamon comes in and talks to Jamie.

In the novel, it says as follows:
"Jamie waited for a flicker of recognition, a sign Salamon found him something familiar about him. There was nothing. 'But then, why should there be?' Jamie thought. There was nothing left of that naive, eighteen-year old boy he had seen."

I don't figure out the meating of 'But then, why should there be?'.

My first question;
Does "then" here mean "at that time"? or "after that"?
A dictionary site says it still has a meaning like "therefore" and "and so".

"then" is sometimes difficult to interpret because of several meanings.

My second question;
I don't understand "why should there be" at all.
If you say it in full, will it be
"why should there be anything familiar about him?" ??

If so, is "should" here emphasizing the question "why"??

It would be a big help if you could check and let me know.

"Jamie waited for a flicker of recognition, a sign Salamon found him something familiar about him. There was nothing. 'But then, why should there be?' Jamie thought. There was nothing left of that naive, eighteen-year old boy he had seen."

'But then, why should there be?'の意味が見い出せません。

1つ目の質問;

2つ目の質問;
"why should there be" の意味がさっぱりわかりません。
"why should there be anything familiar about him?"

Feedback

1. "then" in this context means "after thinking about it again, my thought is". Jamie initially expects Salamon to recognize something familiar about him, *but then* after thinking again (考え直してから), he realizes, "why should there be?" (a rhetorical question).
Here's another example of this: "Japanese is a fun language to learn. But then again, it's very difficult." In this case, "but then" without the "again" actually wouldn't be natural. If you google "but then", you'll find another definition and example.

2. Yes, the full sentence is "why should there be anything familiar about him?". "should" is not emphasizing "why". "should" here just indicates expectation (はず). So I would translate the sentence to 「でもやっぱり、あるはずあるか(=いや、あるはずがない)」と思った.

But then, why should there be?
You can disregard the ‘but then’. The sentence could be rewritten as: ‘In any case, why would he recognize him?’

Expressions like "then again" and "but then" are used when you have had a new thought that is the opposite of what you just said, or one that contradicts a good idea.

For example: "I want to visit Thailand. Then again, I don't like hot weather, so maybe Norway would be better."

"I want to move to a smaller house. But then, where would my children sleep?"

A dictionary site says it still has ahas a similar meaning liketo "therefore" and "and so"."
