My Knowledge of Chinese Characters

I don't know about other native speakers, but I'd say my knowledge of Chinese characters is stagnating and not expanding as I grow older, even though I read widely. It reached its peak when I completed my college entrance exam.

I memorized many obscure characters while preparing for the exam. After graduating from high school, I just don't see the necessity of learning new words. I think my current lexical resource is sufficient for me to express myself effectively and coherently in various contexts. As for how to speak and write eloquently and beautifully, I suppose sometimes it's more about word choice than having an extensive vocabulary.

I've heard that the number of commonly used Chinese characters is around 3000, and the average adult native speaker knows between 3500 and 4500. I've taken an online test that suggests I know approximately 4700 to 5000 characters. However, I'm unsure if it's accurate or if I've been regressing.
