Dear readers,
a few days ago I listened to the news about forestry. Since I hadn't heard so much about it before, I did some research and found an article about foresters in Saxony, Germany.
Four years ago, Sachsenforst, the governmental organisation being responsible for the forests in Saxony, used to save money by reducing costs for apprenticeships. If it hadn't come to such surprisingly destructive storms in spring 2018, the spending would still have been reduced. Massive damages in the forests were caused by those storms. Furthermore, there are constant damages by bugs an droughts. Considering also the fact that many foresters are getting older and are going to retire soon, the demand of young foresters was in fact huge. Consequently, Sachsenforst canceled his reducing-costs- program and invested in training places instead. So it comes that a variety of students have been interested in a career as forester. As a consequence, in 2020 there were 40% more trainees than three years before.
During their trainings, they are not only cutting down trees. In order to react appropriately to climate change, they are learning about environment protection as well as methods for planting, wood working and forest conversion. As part of their apprentice, the trainees are supposed to work on a project themselves to protect the environment.
While 64 people chose to do the apprentice in 2021, even more began their studies in forestry at University in Dresden.
In summary one can say that the interest in the forest has increased in the last few years in Germany; either apprenticeship or going to University has become more popular. This is a hopeful sign for Saxony and its field of forestry.
