都市の提案

これはアイルランドの都市について文章は最後になると思います。時々、新しい公式の都市を作る提案があります。昨日話したキルケニーとスライゴのよく提案されます。それに、他の町は都市に昇格される提案があります。

もっとも大きい候補はタラ（英語：Tallaght）です。ちなみに両方のカタカナはタラでも、歴史のタラ（英語：Tara）に関係がありません。タラの境は不明確なので、人口は８万人から２０万人です。郡庁所在地でもあります。そのため、自治体はもうあります。都市になると、第３−５都市になります。しかし、場所は問題です。実際に、タラはダブリン市にあります。１９６０年代まで、離れた村でしたが、１９７０年代ぐらいにダブリンに吸収されました。今、タラは郊外だけじゃなくて、ダブリンの都心にあることが言えます。アイルランド人の感覚では、同じ都市部に２つの都市は無理です。アメリカや日本ではそんなところは一般的ですが、ここではすごく珍しいです。

同様に、ソードズ（Swords・４万人）、ダンリーリ（Dún Laoghaire・５万人）、ドロヘダ（Drogheda・境による４万人ー８万人）も都市昇格を目指していますが、ダブリンの都心になくても、一般的にはダブリンの郊外と考えられています。

次に、ダンダークは北アイルランドの国境に近い町です。人口は６万ぐらいです。前のアメリカの大統領 Joe Bidenの先祖はダンダークの辺りに住んでいました。最後に、アトローン（Athlone・人口３万人）も時々提案されます。他の候補にくらべて、小さい町だけど、国の真ん中にあります。近く都市がありません。もしアイルランドと北アイルランドを統一されたら、アトローンを新しい首都にする提案までありました。ダブリンとベルファストに比べて、中立と考えられていて、コークは北アイルランドから遠過ぎると考えられたからです。

正直、近い将来に新しい都市ができることはなさそうと思います。政府は自治体の数を増やしたくないです。しかし、遠い未来にはスライゴやダンダークの可能性がもっとも高いと思います。どちらも他の都市に離れていて、ダンダークの多さも人口も有利です。

I think this is the last Irish city related post. Sometimes there are proposals to make new cities. Kilkenny and Sligo, which I mentioned yesterday are often proposed. There's also other towns that have been proposed to be upgraded to cities.

The largest candidate is is Tallaght. By the way, despite the katakana being タラ for both, it's not related to the historical Tara. Because the boundaries are unclear, the population is between 80,000 and 200,000. It's even a county town. As a result, it has its own local government. If it became a city, it would become the third to fifth biggest city. However, it's location is a problem. The truth is that Tallaght is in Dublin City. Until the 1960s, it was a separate village, but in the 1970s it was absorbed by Dublin. Now, you could say it's not just a suburb, but part of Dublin City Centre. In Irish people's view of a city, having two cities in the same urban area is impossible. In America and Japan, that sort of situation is common, but it's really rare here.

Similarly, Swords (40,000 people), Dún Laoghaire (50,000 people) and Drogheda (depending on the border, 40,000 to 80,000 people) would like to officially become cities, but while these towns aren't in the centre of Dublin, they're generally thought of as suburbs of Dublin.

Dundalk is a town near the Northern Irish border. The population is about 60,000. The former US president Joe Biden's ancestors lived around Dundalk. And last is Athlone (population 30,000). Compared to the other candidates, it's a small town, but it's in the very middle of the country. There are no nearby cities. There was even a proposal to make to make Athlone the capital if Ireland and Northern Ireland ever united. Compared to Dublin or Belfast, it was considered more neutral, and Cork was considered too far from Northern Ireland.

Honestly, I think a new city is unlikely in the near future. The government doesn't want to increase the amount of local governments. However in the further future, I think Sligo and Dundalk have the best chances. Both are distant from other cities, and Dundalk's population will help.
